So for those who missed it, this is some of what was going on at ‘Sky’s The Limit’ this past Saturday:  my brother the artist, dance maestro, potential fitness video guru.

Miami and Bangkok connect

February 23, 2010

My brother and Jen are coming to Bangkok. I’d love to say that I’m the sole reason for them to drop everything and fly halfway around the world, but that’s not the case (although I’m sure it helped). Their friend Logan Bay asked them to be part of a show he’s putting together here in Thailand.

Logan was the winning entry among 250 proposals submitted to apexart asking for a chance at their Franchise Two. Apexart will now provide him with the help needed to set up Free Size, just outside of Bangkok.

The artists participating in Free Size include: Alvaro Ilizarbe (Miami), Jen Stark (Miami), Juan Angel Chavez (Chicago) & P7 (Bangkok). For more details, check Logan’s free size blog.

collabo

July 28, 2009

It was hot (down right muggy), bright, mesmerizing and loud. The Collabo Show was overall a very satisfying experience even though they ran out of beer rather quick, something that didn’t go well with the sweltering ambiance of the locale.

My ears are still ringing from all the drumming/banging/crashing/whatever-you-wanna-call it is they were doing that was so overwhelming I couldn’t even look their way… although it could have been the bright strobe light, illuminating the inert, stuffed feline, lying belly-up on a table in their general direction.

I couldn’t help but become fixated on the jelly fish in the water tank under the blue light, as well as the hot air paper balloons that gloriously burned over the Little Haiti skies. (With the couple of exceptions where they burned either just prior or right after being released.)

Honestly, I don’t know what it all meant but it was a lot of fun and as torturous as some of the work looked (e.g.  putting together the live piece in the suffocating confines of their installation), it was the artists who seemed to be having the most fun.

I’ll be gone till October, November, December…

It sure has felt like an eternity.

If you’re looking for some crazy sick artwork, check this piece by Alvaro ‘Freegums’ Ilizarbe. He’s selling the 33′x24′ wallpaper posters by the bundle (or singles if you like), mainly because they can be arranged as a continuous piece in any which direction you please.

The name of the piece -October, November, December- stems from the time it took him to finish it. If you’re familiar with his work, you might have noticed his affinity toward snakes.

Aris, over at addic[tee]d, gets down and dirty with Miami artist/designer/entrepreneur Alvaro Ilizarbe, a.k.a. Freegums.

Alvaro talks about his influences, secret identities, arch-enemies, what he was doing before Freegums; about October, November, December -the piece that would take 3 months to finish (off the chain/I’ll post a pic later), and best of all, he tells us what the hell Freegums means anyway.

Speaking of Miami tax-payers/artists/designers/ fan-mail-getters/jacuzzi boys, let me speak of the one known as Freegums and also known as Alvaro Ilizarbe. Alvaro’s been doing his thing for a few years already, coming out with some fresh to def tees (originally with the thick.cc brand). I’m not going to say that he started the whole wear, then repeat movement, but reversibility is something that goes hand in hand with the Freegums brand.

What really makes his shirts are his designs, from the very simple to the overtly intricate. They are *nice*, but you might say I’m biased, so why not check-out his site and figure that out for yourself? He happens to have updated it into a more appealing blog format, and you know how that goes. He also happens to be having a very short-term-straight-from-freegumsdotcom-sale. While supplies last, of course.
